Xi Jinping tells Donald Trump cooperation is the only choice for China and the US
Chinese leader spoke to the US president-elect by phone on Monday

President Xi Jinping said stepping up cooperation is the only choice for China and the US, in his first telephone conversation with president-elect Donald Trump on Monday.
In the call, Xi told Trump, who was strongly critical of China during his campaign, that the two should “meet at an early date” to discuss bilateral ties, state-run Xinhua reported.
Xi had already sent a congratulatory message to Trump following the Republican’s unexpected election victory last Tuesday.
Observers said Beijing was wary of possible turbulence in Sino-US ties under the Trump administration, and wanted to establish contact with the incoming president as early as possible.
During his election campaign, Trump vowed to impose a tariff of 45 per cent on Chinese exports to the US.
Even Sino-US cooperation on climate change – trumpeted by officials from both nations as a sign that the two sides can still work together despite having differences – is facing uncertainty because Trump has vowed to cancel the Paris Agreement that was signed last December.
