US President Donald Trump has again congratulated his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on his consolidation of power at a Communist Party congress, ahead of the two men’s meeting in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning that Xi had achieved a “great political victory” at the party congress last month.

“Getting ready to make a major speech to the National Assembly here in South Korea,” Trump tweeted from Seoul. “Then will be headed to China where I very much look forward to meeting with President Xi who is just off his great political victory.”

Trump congratulated Xi last month on his “extraordinary elevation” after the Chinese president was appointed as the party’s general secretary for a second term.

Trump also said in an interview with the Fox Business network that some people might call Xi “the king of China”.

Trump was in South Korea on Wednesday morning as part of his Asian tour after visiting Japan.

He is due to give an address on North Korea during his speech to the National Assembly.

The US president is scheduled to arrive in Beijing with his wife Melania on Wednesday afternoon.

He will then meet Xi and China’s first lady Peng Liyuan at the Forbidden City in Beijing, the former imperial palace in the centre of the capital.

The four are expected to sit down for tea, watch an opera performance and then have dinner at the former residence of Chinese emperors.

North Korea’s nuclear programme and trade issues are expected to be high on the agenda during Trump’s visit to China.
