US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that China was helping to rein in North Korea, but he hoped Beijing would do more.

Speaking after landing in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Trump described Chinese President Xi Jinping as a “good man” who “wants to do right”.

He said he hoped China would continue to ratchet up the pressure on its restive neighbour.

Trump held talks with Xi on Thursday, which led to the signing of business deals worth more than US$253 billion.

During their meeting, Trump said time was running out to rein in North Korea and he urged China to work faster.

In a statement released after the talks, China’s foreign ministry said China and the US had a “common goal” for the Korean peninsula, and that they would increase communication on the issue.
