China-US relations: Terry Branstad to volunteer for Trump campaign
- Branstad to leave Beijing next month and help the US president with his re-election bid
- Envoy says phase one trade deal the biggest achievement in his three years in the Chinese capital

“My son is very involved in [Trump’s] campaign. And I will be a volunteer to help him ... but it’ll be strictly as a volunteer,” Branstad said in an interview with Chinese-language Phoenix TV on Thursday.
He said he also saw the phase one trade deal between the two countries as his biggest achievement during his three-year tenure.
“The biggest achievement, I think, is the fact that this was a long and difficult process ... They fought long and hard to reach an agreement that I think is fair and reciprocal and is going to make a real difference for both of our countries,” Branstad said.
Without giving a reason for the departure, the US embassy in China announced on Monday that Branstad, 73, would retire from his position as US envoy and leave Beijing in early October.
