Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian praised the role Egypt and the United Nations had played in brokering the truce, which took effect on Friday morning, and highlighted China’s contribution to the negotiations.
More than 230 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed during 11 days of fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
“We welcome the ceasefire and hope it will be earnestly implemented to stop the conflict and the violence,” Zhao said on Friday.
“China has done a lot of work to help ease the situation along with other parties.”
