China hails South Korea’s Olympic spirit after row over diplomatic boycotts
- South Korean foreign ministry offers support for Beijing’s hosting of the 2022 Winter Games, but does not say whether Seoul will send a delegation
- The gesture shows the ‘friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries’, Chinese government spokesman says

“China and South Korea are always giving full support to each other in terms of holding Olympic Games,” foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday.
“This is a symbol that shows the friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries and illustrates mutual collaborative friendship highlighted in Olympic spirit.”
Choi Young-sam, South Korea’s foreign ministry spokesman, on Tuesday said that the Seoul government hoped February’s Games would be successful and contribute to regional peace and inter-Korean relations.
“Our government has been supporting a successful hosting of the Beijing Winter Olympics,” he said.
But Choi did not clarify whether South Korea – which is to host the 2024 Youth Olympics – would send a government delegation to the Beijing Games. He said Seoul would be watching developments involving other countries.
