China-US relations: top former American envoys call for talks and restraint as Ukraine crisis adds to tensions
- 50 years after the signing of the Shanghai Communique, Henry Kissinger says Beijing and Washington must find a way to agree on their disagreements
- Gary Locke says it has become popular and far too easy for China and the US to demonise each other

“[They must] remain in permanent dialogue and to attempt and achieve settlement of their disagreements in a cooperative attitude,” Kissinger told the event in Shanghai via video link.
The event was to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Shanghai Communique during former US president Richard Nixon’s visit to China in 1972, which paved the way for the normalisation of ties.
Kissinger said the Shanghai Communique was one of the most extraordinary diplomatic documents of history and had become a guiding principle of the relations between the two countries.
The event was organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and the Committee of 100, with participants of leading diplomats, China-based American CEOs, and academics attending in person or virtually.
