The Ukraine war will have a long-term impact on US-China ties, and Beijing should anticipate security pressures and monitor the role of non-state actors such as Elon Musk in international conflicts, according to a state-backed Chinese think tank.

The warnings came from Li Yan, deputy director of the institute of world political studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), in a commentary published on Monday by China-US Focus.

“The conflict has rebuilt the dynamic between Western nations, which means significant changes have taken place in the background for China-US interaction,” he wrote.

Li said the international community increasingly viewed the US-China relationship through the lens of a rivalry between “Western” and “non-Western” countries. He added that the bloc led by the US would further bind China and Russia, making it easier to contain them both.

Li said the ban on Russian banks from the Swift financial messaging system, which has blocked them from arranging payments with foreign financial institutions, showed the potential risks China faced when it came to economic and financial security and protecting overseas interests.
