Beijing should focus on emerging nations as tensions with Washington intensify, a senior expert on US-China relations has advised, while underlining the importance of managing differences between the two rival powers.
US-China ties represent the most important bilateral relations in the world, said Huang Ping, a member of China’s top political advisory body.
However, uncertainty and risks were on the rise with the relationship at its “worst” level in 50 years, he warned, with the US labelling a rising China as a “systemic challenge” to its global dominance.

Finding a way to manage the rifts would be key to stabilising ties, Huang told a Hong Kong seminar on US-China relations.
As the US pivots to Asia and unites regional allies to counter China, Beijing should also focus on emerging nations, Huang said, stressing that their economic growth had already surpassed that of Western nations.
