Chinese vice foreign minister Xie Feng has called on the United States to open the door to trade and tech cooperation as China prepares to welcome back foreign investors to the country.
“I have heard that a number executives of foreign companies have started to draw up schedules for group visits to China and are eager to come to China to seek new investment opportunities for fear of missing out on China’s modernisation,” Xie said at a forum hosted by Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University in Beijing on Monday.
“A high-speed railway should be a two-way road and you cannot ask others to open up while closing your own door, which is self-contradictory and detrimental to others.”

Xie, who is tipped to replace Qin Gang as the next Chinese ambassador to the US, accused “certain countries” of competing unfairly against China, including using restrictions on technology exports.

Technology should not be used as “a weapon for geopolitical struggles”, Xie told academics and foreign business leaders in Beijing.

“Competition should be fair and reasonable, with you catching up with me instead of you killing me,” he said.
