China’s Wang Yi urges closer French cooperation ahead of expected Macron visit
- The two countries should play a key role in dealing with global chaos and changes, Wang says in phone call to Emmanuel Bonne
- This year marks the 20th anniversary of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership

Wang’s phone call with Emmanuel Bonne, Macron’s diplomatic counsellor, was his first public diplomatic task since being promoted to the 24-member Politburo as well as the role of director of the Central Committee’s Foreign Affairs Commission Office following his 10-year stint as foreign minister.
“The current world situation is full of turbulence and change, and the healthy and stable development of Sino-French relations is of special significance,” Wang said.
“As permanent members of the UN Security Council and independent major countries, China and France should strengthen strategic communication and play an important role in coping with global chaos and changes.
“China is willing to, together with France, intensify high-level exchanges, deepen strategic mutual trust, and open up new prospects for China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.”
Macron signalled his plan to visit China sometime early this year when he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Group of 20 Summit in Indonesia in November, but no details of a trip have been released.
