Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has called for maintaining “clear and stable borders” with Myanmar and cracking down on cross-border crime while warning against a “spillover” of the escalating violence in the Southeast Asian country.
Qin made the comments on Tuesday during a rare visit to the southwestern frontier province of Yunnan, where he highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in the region and promoting “friendly cooperation” between the neighbouring countries.
Qin called for efforts by the Communist Party, government, military, police and civilians to strengthen the border defence system and stressed the importance of maintaining stable borders and “severely” cracking down on cross-border criminal activity.

He also urged implementation of the Land Borders Law, in effect since 2022, which is aimed at protecting and strengthening China’s borders through increased defence and supporting social and economic development in border areas.
After his stop in Yunnan, Qin headed to Myanmar on Tuesday afternoon for a two-day visit. He will then attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting in India from Thursday to Friday.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Qin’s visit was aimed at implementing the results of President Xi Jinping’s “historic visit” to Myanmar in January 2020, deepening economic cooperation, helping maintain stability and achieving sustainable development.
