China and Vietnam have pledged to deepen cooperation in defence, and to bring relations to a “new level” as the two countries touted Vietnamese President To Lam’s visit to China as a “complete success”.
A joint declaration issued late on Tuesday said the Asian neighbours would continue to improve their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and “promote relations between the two parties and the two countries to a new level”.

“Both sides reaffirmed that they would maintain high-level strategic communication between the two parties and the two countries and jointly lead the development of China-Vietnam relations,” it said, adding that cooperation in “strategic areas” such as diplomacy and security would be strengthened.

Particularly on defence and security, China and Vietnam agreed to boost exchanges between their two militaries “at all levels”, including border, naval and coastguard exchanges.

The communist countries would also ramp up their information exchange and experience sharing on “anti-interference … and prevention of ‘colour revolutions’ to jointly maintain political security”, it said.

The 12-point joint declaration came at the end of Lam’s official trip to China, where he met top Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The meetings, according to the declaration, saw leaders from both sides exchanging views on bilateral cooperation and also international and regional issues in a “friendly and frank atmosphere”.
