The Chinese navy and coastguard said on Friday that they rescued 17 Filipino crew members from a Singaporean-flagged cargo ship that had capsized near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
According to the China Coast Guard (CCG), the Maritime Search and Rescue Centre in Sansha, Hainan province, received a distress report at around 1.30am on Friday.
The vessel appeared to be in trouble about 55 nautical miles northwest of Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Island in China. The centre sent two coastguard vessels immediately to conduct rescue operations.
The ship had 21 Filipino crew members on board and by midday, 17 had been recovered. Fourteen were reported stable, two had died, and one remained in critical condition.
Four sailors were still missing, with search-and-rescue ‍efforts continuing.
The Southern Command Theatre of the People’s Liberation Army also said it deployed a military aircraft for search operations over the area.

The Manila Bulletin confirmed that the vessel was the Singaporean-flagged general cargo ship M/V Devon Bay, loaded with iron ore.
It listed off Ango Bay in Pangasinan, prompting parallel rescue operations by both the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the CCG.
The PCG reported that the ship left Gutalac, Zamboanga del Sur, in the southern Philippines bound for Yangjiang, China, and suddenly tilted at about 25 degrees when it was 141 nautical miles west of Sabangan Point, Ango Bay.
PCG spokeswoman Captain Noemie Cayabyab confirmed that some crew members were rescued by a CCG vessel passing through the area.
She said the rescue was a humanitarian mission conducted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which requires all states to direct their ships to help persons in distress at sea, including those transiting maritime zones of other coastal states.
Chinese media said this was the second time in a month that China had saved Filipino lives in the South China Sea, an area where China has overlapping claims with other countries in the region, including the Philippines.
On December 25, the Chinese embassy in Manila said a PLA Navy destroyer had provided “swift humanitarian assistance” to a Filipino fisherman who had been stranded in the waters for three days.
