Starmer, who is on a drive to repair London’s relations with Beijing, said it had been ‘far too long’ since the last visit of this type
China and Britain should deepen dialogue and strengthen cooperation amid an increasingly complex international environment, Chinese President Xi Jinping said as he began talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In his brief opening remarks at their meeting in Beijing on Thursday, the Chinese leader said their relationship had suffered setbacks in recent years but the two countries had the chance to begin a new chapter.
“China stands ready to work with the UK to foster a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership,” Xi said.
“As long as we take a broad historical perspective, transcend differences and respect each other, we can deliver results that stand the test of history,” he said.
Starmer told Xi that it had been “far too long” since the last visit by a British leader, adding that the two countries should advance relations for the sake of global growth and stability.
“China is a vital player on the global stage and it’s vital to build a more sophisticated relationship where we identify opportunities to collaborate, but also allow a meaningful dialogue on areas where we disagree,” he said in his opening remarks.
