South China Sea: US and allies apply pressure on Beijing but ‘they’re unlikely to go all out’

  • American aircraft carrier strike groups and a French nuclear submarine carried out separate operations in the disputed waterway this week
  • Analysts expect more such efforts to challenge China’s activities in the region but they do not see an increased risk of conflict breaking out
