Taiwan will incorporate lessons learned from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine into upcoming military exercises, to practise fighting off an attack from Beijing.
Taiwan has raised its alert level since Russia invaded Ukraine, wary of the possibility that Beijing might make a similar assault on the self-ruled island it sees as its own territory, to be reunited by force if necessary.
What lessons to learn from the Ukraine war on defence against any attack from Beijing have been widely debated within Taiwan and also discussed with the United States, according to the Taiwanese defence minister.

Those lessons will be in focus when the first part of this year’s Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan’s largest annual war games, kicks off in May, with the second part to be held in July.
The May exercise would partly be a tabletop exercise based on “various possible actions of the Chinese Communist Party in recent years to invade Taiwan, taking into account the lessons of the Russian-Ukrainian war,” the defence ministry said.
