The former head of Taiwan’s top weapons builder has confirmed that the self-ruled island has developed two types of long-range missiles that could hit Shanghai or Beijing.

Kung Chia-cheng, the ex-president of the government-funded National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, also said the United States had once warned Taiwan against trial launches of a large ballistic missile and had prevented Taipei from obtaining key components for a ship-launched missile.

In his recently published memoir, The Reminiscences of Mr Gong Chia Cheng, the 74-year-old retired rear admiral revealed some behind-the-scenes details of several major missile development projects he was involved in during his time as the institute’s head between 2004 and 2007.

“Code-named W-99, the Yun Feng project involved a supersonic cruise missile using a ramjet engine,” Kung wrote. “When reaching a certain altitude, the solid-fuelled booster of the engine allows the missile to travel at supersonic speeds of just over Mach 3 (3,675km/h or 2,284mph).
