For the first time, Taiwanese analysts will join experts from Japan and the United States in conducting war game simulations for a possible cross-strait conflict.
The event, to be held in Tokyo in mid-July, will analyse various scenarios in which US and Japanese forces could help Taiwan deter a hypothetical attack from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), according to the Institute for National Defence and Security Research, a government think tank in Taipei.
Su Tzu-yun, a senior analyst with the institute, confirmed on Monday that the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies (JFSS), a semi-official Japanese think tank in Tokyo, had invited Taiwanese military and security experts, including those from the institute, to take part in the event.

“This is the first time experts from Taiwan will work with their US and Japanese counterparts on tabletop simulations,” he said.
“Participants are also expected to analyse military scenarios in the Taiwan Strait and East and South China seas and come up with proposals on how the ‘blue team’ could deal with the threats from the ‘red team’,” Su said, referring to the joint US-Japanese-Taiwanese forces and the PLA respectively.
He declined to reveal more details about the event but said this type of simulation typically ran for two to three days, beginning with general discussions of the rules, followed by three rounds of projections about the final results.
