State media has released rare footage of one of the PLA Navy’s most advanced destroyers warning off foreign aircraft near Taiwan with electronic jamming missiles.
The footage, part of a series by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on the country’s naval power, involved the Yanan, a Type 055 guided-missile destroyer.
CCTV said it was the first time the Yanan had been shown using “electronic countermeasures” in “waters near Taiwan island” to warn off foreign aircraft.
The report did not specify where or when the encounter took place, or what country the aircraft were from.
In the clip aired on Thursday, a crew member using binoculars appears to detect a potential threat and give orders to the ship’s starboard side to “prepare”.
The Yanan appears to detect multiple batches of aircraft repeatedly changing direction.
The vessel then switches its radars to high power to expand the search range and prepare missiles for both active and passive jamming, according to the footage.
At the Yanan’s request, the Shandong aircraft carrier sends three aircraft to verify the presence of the other planes before the Yanan launches four electronic jamming missiles.
“Modern naval warfare is not merely a test of a single warship’s strength, but a contest involving all operational systems,” Yanan crew member Wang Liang said in the clip.
Wang said the People’s Liberation Army Navy was on the “front line of all visible and invisible warfare, with encounters encompassing air defence, missile defence, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare”.




Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that must be reunified and has never ruled out the option of doing so by force. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent country but are against any attempt to take the self-governed island by force.
It is not clear from the footage which countries were involved but the US State Department announced in December that it had approved sales of about US$11.1 billion in arms to Taiwan.
Beijing has also been engaged in a diplomatic tit-for-tat with Japan over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s suggestion that a PLA attack on Taiwan would force a military response from Tokyo.
The CCTV series also showed footage of the Nanchang, another Type 055 destroyer, warning off foreign vessels during a blue-water mission with the Liaoning aircraft carrier.
By frequently changing course, the Nanchang prevented two foreign vessels from trying to weave through the carrier’s fleet.
Similarly, it did not say where or when the encounter took place or which other country was involved.
