A government official has died and another was seriously injured after falling off a cliff while attending a banquet in southern China held by one of their colleagues, a newspaper reported. Officials at the meal have also been punished by the local anti-corruption watchdog, the Guangzhou Daily said. The banquet was hosted by an official in the highway administration department in Chaozhou in Guangdong province. Chen Weiqia from the department’s logistics department feasted his superiors and other officials at a restaurant in a mountainous area on New Year’s Eve. After some drinks a deputy director went out to urinate by a cliff edge, fell and was seriously injured, the report said. The department’s chief engineer died after he went to check on the other official and also fell. The city’s anti-corruption watchdog announced on Wednesday that the department’s director and one of his deputies were removed from their positions for violating Communist Party discipline. Two other deputies and the head of a district highway bureau were given a formal warning and demerit.
