4 quirky policy proposals suggested at China’s big annual political bash

The two big events in China’s political calendar open this week in Beijing with some delegates offering some imaginative, arguably offbeat advice to the government. The advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, started its sessions on Thursday, while the National People’s Congress opens on Saturday. Here are some of the more unusual ideas already suggested by delegates this year.
1. A cap on the number of Disneylands
China should limit the number of Disney theme parks on the mainland as it will groom children to love western culture and shun their own, according to one political adviser.
China should be building theme parks based on its own history and culture rather than copying from the West, said Li Xiusong, a former deputy head in charge of culture in eastern Anhui province.
Disneyland parks make children “fond of western culture and cold to Chinese culture”, Li was quoted as saying by the China Youth Daily.

Chinese parks could be based on more traditional themes such as the 16th century classic adventure novel Journey to the West, according to the political adviser.
