Former Chinese justice minister Fu Zhenghua has been detained for an investigation into “serious violations” of party discipline, the Communist Party’s anti-corruption watchdog announced on Saturday.
State media did not give details of the reasons for the probe announced by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).
Fu, 66, once a political rising star, was removed from his post in the ministry early last year, indicating his retirement. He was appointed a member of the social and legal affairs committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a consultative role.

He is also a member of the party’s elite Central Committee and is the first member of the 200-strong body to be detained by graft investigators since the 19th Party Congress in 2017.
Fu, a native of Hebei province, made his name in 2010 with a high-profile bust at Beijing’s exclusive Passion nightclub months after being named the capital’s police chief.

He was chosen in 2013 to lead the investigation into China’s former security chief, Zhou Yongkang, who was jailed for life in 2015 for corruption and abuse of power.
