The former president of a medical university in southwest China has been cleared of wrongdoing by a Communist Party disciplinary watchdog after taking up a highly paid senior executive role at a listed vaccine maker.

It comes as the ruling party’s top disciplinary body has vowed to crack down on collusion between government officials and business, including the “revolving door” between the public and private sector.

The Yunnan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection said its two-year investigation had found that the post-retirement income of Jiang Runsheng, former president of Kunming Medical University, was “legitimate” and did not violate the employment rules for retired leading party and government cadres.

“Jiang Runsheng gave full play to his professional expertise after retirement,” the watchdog said in a statement late on Tuesday.

“The salary, bonus, shares and share allotment for senior executives [of the listed company], as well as the stock options that have not yet been realised as actual income, are all in accordance with the strict procedures for listed companies. This income is legally obtained and subject to public disclosure by the company,” the statement said, without naming the company.

It said Jiang’s job with the vaccine maker was “not related to his original position and authority”, and that “he did not use his position, power and influence to seek illegal interests”.
