Security and Covid-19 prevention efforts have been ramped up in Shenzhen as the southern Chinese city counts down to President Xi Jinping’s trip to neighbouring Hong Kong this week.
On Monday afternoon, traffic and patrol officers were deployed on roads leading to Kylin Villa, a resort at the foot of hills in Nanshan district that has been used for official gatherings and important guests for decades.
Entrances and exits to nearby university campuses were also guarded, with plain clothes officers stationed on the roads nearby and a helicopter flying overhead.

A farmer living near the villa said residents were told to temporarily close their farms to business for a few days.
From Tuesday until Sunday, the city will be a no-fly zone for drones, hot air balloons, paragliders and other aircraft, “to ensure the [Hong Kong handover anniversary] celebrations are held safely”, according to a police statement.

The police will temporarily shut down any take-off and landing grounds for these aircraft, with exemptions limited to preapproved activities including live-streaming, emergencies and weather monitoring.
