A year after a horrifying human trafficking case in eastern China made national headlines, the victim, known as the “chained woman”, was still being closely guarded by authorities, and people concerned about the woman’s well-being said getting access to her remained impossible.
The case came to light last February after a video began to circulate on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. It showed a dazed middle-aged woman who had been chained by her neck inside a shed, apparently by her husband.
“It’s been a year, and multiple levels of officials have been punished. The public cares not about how they were handled, but rather how the ‘chained woman’ is, how her eight children are,” Li Zhuang, a well-known former Beijing-based lawyer, wrote in a post on his Weibo account on Wednesday.
In the post, which had since been removed, Li said he had been barred from visiting the woman by authorities in the city of Xuzhou in the eastern province of Jiangsu.

Authorities said in February that the husband had been detained and the rest of the family was under the care of village officials.
After days of contradictory official statements that fuelled public outrage, authorities punished 17 officials in the province.

Authorities said at the time that the woman had been sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment, but there have been no further updates about her status since.
