The defence of Quemoy will be a key focus when Taiwan’s military holds its annual Han Kuang exercises next month, according to a source.
Also known as Kinmen, the Taiwan-controlled island is just 10km (6 miles) away from the mainland Chinese city of Xiamen.
The Taiwanese military source also said security measures had been tightened to counter drones being flown to Quemoy from mainland China, and this would also be part of the drills.

The decisions are a response to large-scale war games conducted by the People’s Liberation Army last month – called Joint Sword-2024A – that simulated a blockade of Taiwan and its defence outposts of Quemoy and Matsu. There have also been multiple incidents of civilian mainland Chinese drones entering Quemoy in recent years.
Han Kuang, Taiwan’s biggest annual military exercises, will take place from July 22 to 26. The source said Quemoy would play a bigger role in the live-fire drills this year.

“The defence of Quemoy has always been included in the Han Kuang exercises in previous years, but the PLA’s recent Joint Sword-2024A has prompted the military to intensify the drills there next month,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
