‘Drunk driver’ killed 6 in May Day holiday bus stop car crash in China: report
State broadcaster quotes police as saying 29-year-old motorist was speeding and trying to overtake another vehicle
Police in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong have arrested a motorist who ploughed his car into a crowd of people at a bus stop in Tengzhou on Sunday afternoon, killing six.
On Tuesday afternoon, state broadcaster CCTV quoted Tengzhou police as saying that the motorist, a 29-year-old man, was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The man, identified only by his surname Cai, was speeding and trying to overtake another vehicle when he hit the people at the bus stop at around 4.05pm, the report said. Two people died at the scene and four others died later despite medical treatment. A further two people were injured but not in a life-threatening condition.
“The driver, Cai, was immediately brought under control. The public security authorities conducted a blood test on Cai, which showed an alcohol content of 129.7mg/100ml, excluding drug-impaired driving,” the report said, adding that the investigation was continuing.
Jimu News, an online media outlet affiliated with Hubei Daily, an official newspaper in central China, first reported on the incident on Tuesday morning, more than a day after a video of the crash was widely circulated on social media.
