Typhoon Bavi is continuing to bring torrential downpours to northeast China, forcing the transport and economic hub of Shenyang to halt non-essential travel and shut down parts of its subway network.

Emergency measures remain in place on Tuesday in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, where Bavi continues to lash the city, despite weakening into a tropical storm.

Across the province, more than 360,000 people have been evacuated as a result of the weather system, according to state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday morning.

In Shenyang, schools were suspended on Monday as well as outdoor activities and construction site operations, while city authorities urged residents to work from home and avoid non-essential trips.

The heavy rainfall triggered urban flooding across Shenyang on Monday, leaving numerous vehicles submerged. Standing water reached depths of nearly 300mm (11in) along several of the city’s main roads.

By Tuesday morning, the municipal government had announced the closure of multiple subway entrances and the temporary suspension of three entire transit lines because of the relentless downpour.
