China’s latest Covid-19 outbreak continues with 50 new cases

  • Hebei has now overtaken Heilongjiang as the province with the most cases as cities continue with mass testing and lockdowns
  • Meanwhile, workers in Beijing are being told not to dump snow from infected areas in other districts
China on Sunday reported 50 new local symptomatic Covid-19 cases across nine provinces, as one of the country’s biggest outbreaks this year shows early signs of stabilising.

Hebei province reported 21 cases, overtaking the northeastern province of Heilongjiang as the area with the most cases. Heilongjiang had reported the most daily cases for eight straight days. The number of cases is broadly in line with the numbers seen in recent days.

A vast majority of the symptomatic cases in Hebei were in Xinji, a small city about 60km (37 miles) from the provincial capital Shijiazhuang, which reported 18 cases.

The Shijiazhuang city health authorities also reported three symptomatic and two asymptomatic cases at a quarantine facility on Saturday.

The National Health Commission also reported 21 asymptomatic cases from the community, which the ministry does not include in the official count.

Meanwhile, as snow fell in Beijing and other northern parts of China, workers sent to clear the streets were warned that snow from locked down districts should not be piled up in other parts of the capital, Beijing Daily reported.

Elsewhere in Hebei, Jinzhou, a city of around half a million people administered by Shijiazhuang, has carried out 443,024 nucleic acid tests, its third round of testing, all of which proved negative.

The city also mobilised 1,108 “disinfecting workers” to clean homes in areas where confirmed cases have been found and places to which such patients have been.

“According to our plans, we will have completed disinfection of homes near epidemic areas by November 8,” Shijiazhuang’s deputy mayor Zhang Fengzhen said.

In the southern region of Guangxi, the authorities of a county on the border with Vietnam set up roadblocks, asking drivers to register their place of origin, after a number of imported cases were reported.

China has faced difficulty controlling cases from its border regions, and one city on Myanmar border, Ruili, has experienced multiple lockdowns totalling about 200 days.

Since October 17, the beginning of the latest wave of cases, 876 local symptomatic cases have been identified across China.

Most were in Heilongjiang province, originating from an imported case, and in Inner Mongolia, where domestic tourists visited a restaurant and spread the virus to other parts of the country.

China on Saturday said its strict zero-Covid policy would remain because it aligned with “national conditions and science”.
