Senior Ukrainian ocean scientist ‘joins’ China’s leading naval defence university
- Yuriy Semenov has started as a professor at the College of Shipbuilding Engineering, according to Chinese media reports that are no longer available
- The applied mathematician specialising in fluid dynamics had left Ukraine for Britain following the Russian invasion

Yuriy Semenov, who specialises in studying the flow of fluids and related applications in ships and underwater vehicles, started as a full-time professor at the Harbin Engineering University’s College of Shipbuilding Engineering on February 1, the reports said.
Neither Semenov nor the college immediately responded to the Post’s inquiry about details of the recruitment, but multiple Chinese outlets earlier revealed that Semenov had met college director Li Ye and his deputy Ni Baoyu to accept the job.
The reports quoted Li as saying that Semenov had made outstanding contributions to the research and application of hydrodynamics, and that the college expected him to help expand the discipline, train new talent and boost international collaboration.
Ni hoped that Semenov would give full play to his international influence, enhance the college’s international visibility and help draw young talent from overseas, according to Chinese media reports that are no longer available on the internet.
Semenov said he was very happy to join the college and work with Chinese colleagues to promote research and technology transfer in related fields, adding that he would like to adapt to his life in China as soon as possible.
