Top AI medical scientists Roland Eils and Irina Lehmann take on part-time posts in China

Married researchers have published more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers and are pioneers of artificial intelligence in medicine

Top German medical scientists Roland Eils and Irina Lehmann have taken up part-time positions at Fudan University in Shanghai, according to the Chinese institution’s website.

The married couple started the positions in April, while retaining their primary affiliation with BIH at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

China has growing ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine – a field that Eils and Lehmann have helped to pioneer.

Eils earned his doctorate in mathematics from Heidelberg University in 1995, and was elected as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences in 2018.

He is an internationally renowned computational biologist and scientific strategist who has led major German research institutions – including the German Cancer Research Centre and Heidelberg University – in establishing national platforms.

He was named one of the most influential researchers globally in 2022, according to Clarivate’s list of “Highly Cited Researchers”.
