Hundreds of people in eastern China surrounded a car after its driver tried to run over a woman carrying a baby in a dispute over jumping a queue, according to a news website report.

The argument started in Nanjing on Thursday afternoon when a young woman pushed into the queue to buy some milk tea, the news website Jschina.com.cn reported.

Several customers, including the driver of an Audi, were incensed.

The motorist slapped the woman with the baby twice, the report said.

The mother tried to leave, but the driver got into her car and chased her down the pavement.

The woman took refuge in a beauty parlour, but the driver blocked the entrance with her car, with a Nanjing Military Command entry permit in the window, the report said.
