The body of a six-metre-long shark has been moved – with the aid of a crane – into a housing estate in the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao. But it remains unknown whether its mysterious owner intends to turn the giant fish into a specimen, trophy or a very large meal.

One resident in the estate said a neighbour caught the shark far out at sea, and intended to turn it into a specimen, according to news website Www.youth.cn.

But other residents said the shark was very likely to be eaten since the same neighbour bought another shark last year, which he shared with them.

An expert who viewed photos of the shark it appeared to be a great white, a threatened species that is found in all oceans, including the East China Sea.

Local fishery officials said the shark was protected in China and could not be traded. They vowed to conduct an investigation.
