Update | Chinese drunk driver plunges off elevated section of road in central Beijing

A drunk motorist drove his Land Rover off an elevated section of road in the centre of Beijing and fell about eight metres to the ground, clipping another car passing by underneath, state media reported.

The driver suffered head injuries and cracked ribs, the China News Service reported, but did not say how serious his injuries were.The other driver emerged unscathed.

The accident happened at 1.40 am on Thursday at Guo Mao bridge in the Chaoyang district of the capital.

A reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily who was at the scene said the driver had ploughed through several metres of guard rail before plunging to the ground.

An initial investigation by the police found the driver was drink driving when the accident happened and he was also suspected of having an illegal driving licence, The Mirror reported.
