Two Chinese window cleaners killed as strong winds send them careering into glass

Two cleaners hanging off a building in Xian by rope were killed when a sudden wind blew them away from the structure and then smashed them back into the glass on Friday, the Huashang Daily reports.

About a dozen workers were cleaning the exterior of the Greenland Centre, a 270-metre high twin-tower commercial building, in the afternoon. According to a witness, the weather changed without warning at around 5.20pm and a strong wind picked up. He then heard a person scream.

“The men’s ropes might have become tangled after they were first blown around by the wind,” said the witness, who was on a high floor of a nearby building.

The wind flung the two workers against the structure and they hung there lifelessly, another witness said. “It was just like two pieces of clothes hanging there. I think the two died immediately,” he said.

Local police confirmed the workers died amid bad weather. The report said two holes could be seen in the side of the building, between the 12th and 15th floors, with traces of blood.
