Chinese city of Jinan hit by floods after torrential rain

At least 70mm of rain fell in two hours on Monday evening in Jinan, with water levels reaching as high as one metre, the China Youth Daily reported.

Torrential rain has led to heavy flooding in a city in eastern China.

At least 70mm of rain fell in two hours on Monday evening in Jinan, with water levels reaching as high as one metre, the China Youth Daily reported.

Photographs published online show residents wading through waist-high water and drivers clambering on top of their submerged cars as roads were inundated in the city in Shandong province.

A river also overflowed its banks, triggering flooding, the report said.

The National Meteorological Centre issued a blue rainstorm alert on Tuesday morning, the lowest of a four-tier warning system, in seven provinces in central and eastern China, including Shandong.
