Three men have spent 10 days in Shanghai simulating what it is like to be a mother with a newborn baby - cleaning nappies, breastfeeding and all, according to a news report.

Their lessons included using fake breasts to simulate feeding a baby doll every four hours, the China News Service reported.

During the simulation exercise the men were not allowed to go outside, use a mobile phone or watch TV.

Chinese custom states that it is unhealthy for new mothers to go out, shower or use air conditioning for one month after they give birth.

Doctors have tried to dispel the myth as it has led to mothers getting ill and even dying.
