Three children in southwestern China have been awarded Good Samaritan prizes after they were wrongly accused of pushing an elderly woman, a local news website reported.

The organisers of Chinahaoren.com, a charity-run website that honours Good Samaritans around China, presented the three with a shared reward of 5,000 yuan (HK$6,000) for their good deeds in Dazhou, Sichuan province, the website of People’s Daily reported.

In 2013, the elderly woman asked the boys, who were playing nearby, to help her up after she had fallen over.

At the hospital, she turned on them, saying that they had pushed her over. The woman’s relatives sought 7,500 yuan in compensation, and the children’s families ended up paying them 1,100 yuan in a negotiated settlement.

“Our kids were doing the right thing, and yet they ended up having to pay. After such an incident, they won’t ever dare to do good things again,” one of the parents was quoted as saying at the time.

Two police officers who later solved the case also shared a 3,000 yuan reward.
