An 18-year-old waiter allegedly poured scalding water over a woman customer at a hotpot restaurant in eastern China after learning she had complained online about the service.

The woman, surnamed Lin, suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body and is being treated at a military hospital in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, according to a local newspaper.

Lin, her mother, sister and her seven-month-old son were dining at the Mister Hotpot restaurant in the city on Monday night, the Wenzhou Metropolis News reported.

About an hour into the dinner, Lin asked the waiter to refill the soup in her hotpot, but her request was ingored.

“The waiter told me there was still soup inside the pot and accused me of being impolite,” Lin told the newspaper from her hospital bed. “I then asked for the manager but the waiter said ’it doesn’t matter who you call for’ and took off. Nor did the manager come.”

“I then posted a comment on my weibo account complaining about the poor service at Mister Hotpot. Not long after that, the waiter came over, asked me the reason why for sending the message and asked me to go with him to the kitchen.
