Two Chinese thieves made it easy for police to catch them – providing the evidence themselves – after escaping with 5,100 yuan (HK$6,200) stolen from their very first theft, mainland media reports.

The delighted duo were so pleased with their haul that they decided to pose for commemorative photographs on July 4, alongside the cash, the Guangming Daily said on Wednesday.

The young men, identified only by their surnames, Deng and Tang, laid out 100-yuan banknotes on their hotel bed in the city of Chongqing, in southwestern China, so that they spelt out 'bu qiong', or “not poor”, in Chinese, according to photos published online by the newspaper.

The report did not say where the suspects were believed to have stolen the money.

Police were said to have linked the men to the unsolved crime only because the photographs were found on Deng’s mobile phone when he was arrested on suspicion of another theft on Tuesday, the Guangming Daily said..

Police reportedly caught Deng as he was fleeing from a residential building after stealing a watch from a property.
