On Saturday Beijing’s Palace Museum – the world’s most popular museum which attracted 15 million visitors last year – celebrates its 90th birthday. The Forbidden City was home to China’s emperors for 500 years; former emperor Puyi, who had stayed on after the 1911revolution, was expelled on November 11, 1924. The 72-hectare site opened as the Palace Museum on October 10, 1925; Japanese forces surrendered there exactly 20 years later. Today it holds 1.8 million treasures, including 53,482 paintings, 75,031works of calligraphy and 603,000 ancient books, and 367,000 pieces of porcelain. Photos: P.Y.
