Farmers and local entrepreneurs have funded the construction of a huge statue of Mao Zedong in northern China. The statue of the communist leader has been built on a plot of vacant land in Tongxu county near Kaifeng in Henan province, the news website Hnr.cn reported. It cost 3 million yuan (HK$3.5 million) to build and is 36 metres high, the article said. It is made of concrete and steel and is covered in gold paint.
