Jiao Dongzi said most of her subjects had never had a formal picture of themselves taken during their lives, Inewsweek.cn reported.
Many of the photographs were taken in western provinces and regions of the country such as Qinghai and Ningxia.
Jiao visited Guyuan in Ningxia in 2008 and a seriously ill old woman who had never had her picture taken before asked her to do.
This prompted, Jiao, 37, to take more pictures of people in poorer areas, the report said. Her work has been paid for by crowdfunding since 2012.

She said some subjects asked for famous people or places to be photoshopped into their pictures such as Paris and Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
