‘I don’t understand the world of the filthy rich’: gold-filled wedding with ‘emperor’ groom mocked online in China
Photographs of a lavish wedding in southern China have gone viral on social media, according to a newspaper report, prompting envious comments or people mocking the flaunting of wealth.
The wedding was held on Monday in Zhongshan in Guangdong province, the Southern Metropolis News said.
Some of the guests went to fetch the bride for the wedding in expensive sports cars, the newspaper reported.
Photographs also showed the bride wearing at least forty gold bracelets round her neck, along with gold headdresses in her hair.
A guest was quoted as saying that the groom was in his 20s and originally from the Zhongshan area, but had moved to Macau.
“His family does business. They are very rich,” the guest was quoted as saying.
The bride is from Macau and the couple has been dating for about eight years, according to the report.
A similar lavish wedding involving lots of gold and race cars was held in the same area last January for the bridegroom’s brother, according to the report.

The couple hired Hong Kong artist Bob Lam to emcee their wedding, who posted on his Facebook a picture of himself and the bride. “Having been [an emcee] for over 10 years, this should be one of the most exaggerated [weddings]!” Lam wrote in the caption.
One commenter on social media mocked the bride’s heavy jewellery.
“Be careful, your neck may be dislocated!” they wrote. “Lady, is your neck sore, I can help you wear [your gold] for a while.”
Other comments ranged from “I don’t understand the world of the filthy rich” to “to be honest, I’m very envious.”
