A woman was discovered hiding a fruit knife in her bra at an airport security check in central China, local media reported.

The 37-year-old woman, who was not named, was found concealing the 7cm fruit knife when security staff scanned her with a hand-held metal detector at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in Henan province, the Zhengzhou Evening News reported on Monday.

The woman said she hid the knife in her bra because she wanted to peel fruit after passing through customs and did not want to throw the knife away.

Zhang Bin, an security official at the airport, said many passengers had been caught carrying prohibited items during the Lunar New Year travel rush this year, when millions of Chinese make their way home for the most important family festival of the year.

Other incidents included a woman who hid a lighter in her hair and a man who hid matches in a bundle of Renminbi notes.

Zhang said passengers who tried to conceal prohibited items faced fines ranging from 200 to 5,000 yuan (HK$240-5,900).

In more serious cases, the passenger could be detained.
