A man from northern China crashed his car while playing with an app on his mobile phone collecting Lunar New Year red packets of cash from friends and relatives, according to a newspaper report.

He was driving his car in Xinzheng in Henan province when the accident happened on Saturday afternoon, the China Youth Daily reported.

The report did not say how many people were hurt in the crash or the extent of their injuries.

Sending and receiving lunar New Year red packets of cash on the social media app WeChat has become popular in China since the service was launched two years ago.
