In pictures: record numbers of Chinese make rail journeys back to work after Lunar New Year holiday

Heavy snow and ice closed highways and airport runways, prompting an increased number of rail passengers

Record numbers of people have made the long journey back to work on the last day of the week-long Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.

10.3 million trips were made on Saturday as passengers opted for train travel ahead of the arrival of a severe cold front from northern China, according to the China Railway Corporation.

The cold weather hit Liaoning, Shandong and Gansu provinces, with fog also affecting some travellers.

The China Railway Group said it handled just over 9 million passengers on Friday, 6.9 per cent more than last year as most people travelling home would return to work on Sunday.

Meanwhile Thursday saw 7.9 million people making rail journeys - 4.5 per cent more than last year.
