Internet users raise stink over open-air Chinese toilets without roof or walls, built beside children’s playground

Passers-by in a city in China have been shocked by the revealing design of new stand-up men’s public toilets built without walls or roof – right beside a children’s playground, mainland media reports.

The eight toilets in the city of Chongqing, built in two sets of four urinals, have only a small flimsy green plastic door that is just large enough to cover a user’s waist and thighs, news website Youth.cn reported on Saturday.

According to the report, a number of women walking past appeared surprised or embarrassed by the unhindered sight of men standing urinating in the toilets and quickly left.

Photographs of the “Gents” urinals show they have been built with a sign in Chinese that says “British public toilets for gentlemen”.

The toilets were suitable for both adults and children, and flushed automatically, the report said.

“The whole area will be full of the smell of urine,” one internet user wrote.
