Rare sighting of ‘healthy’ wild giant panda caught on camera walking through northern China forest

Endangered animal is usually spotted only in southern China

A giant panda living in the wild has been caught on a remote camera in a sanctuary in northern China, mainland media reports.

Infrared images showed the panda walking among the undergrowth in the Huangguan Mountain Sanctuary in Shanxi province’s Ningshan county, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Most of China’s wild pandas live in Sichuan province, to the south of Shanxi.

Staff discovered the footage after retrieving the camera last Friday.

Researchers from the sanctuary said that based on the photos captured, the giant panda was not yet fully adult and appeared to be healthy and weigh about 60kg.

This is the second time the sanctuary staff have captured images of a panda in the wild, with the previous incident in February last year.
